The hierarchy of angels

 

The hierarchy of angels is a fascinating aspect of Christian theology. It details the different ranks and roles of angels in the celestial order. This hierarchy is often attributed to Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a 5th—or 6th-century theologian who described nine levels of angels divided into three triads or spheres12. 

First Sphere: Closest to God 

1. Seraphim: Known as the “burning ones,” they are the highest order of angels, closest to God, and are often depicted with six wings. They continuously sing praises to God and are associated with purity and light. 

2. Cherubim: Guardians of God’s glory; they are depicted with four faces and four wings. They are known for their knowledge and wisdom. 

3. Thrones: Also called “Ophanim,” are the carriers of God’s throne and are associated with divine justice and authority. 

Second Sphere: Heavenly Governors 

4. Dominions: These angels regulate the duties of lower angels and ensure the cosmos remains in order. They are often depicted with orbs of light. 

5. Virtues: They are known for controlling the elements, are responsible for miracles, and give humans courage and grace. 

6. Powers: These warrior angels defend the cosmos and humanity from evil forces and are responsible for maintaining the balance of power in the universe. 

Third Sphere: Earthly Messengers and Guides 

7. Principalities oversee nations and groups of people, guiding them toward divine will. They are often depicted wearing crowns and carrying scepters. 

8. Archangels: Known as the chief messengers, they deliver important messages from God to humans. Famous archangels include Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. 

9. Angels: The lowest order, they are the most involved with human affairs, acting as guardians and messengers. Each person is believed to have a guardian angel. 

This hierarchical structure emphasizes angels' different roles and responsibilities, reflecting their proximity to God and their functions in the divine order12.
